ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS OF MOZAMBIQUE
The University of St. Thomas of Mozambique was established in 2004 as a result of collective collaboration involving various dedicated and committed individuals. This institution did not come out of nowhere; it is, in fact, the culmination of dreams, aspirations, and visions shared by people who believe in the importance of education for the social and economic development of the country.
It is essential to highlight that the journey toward the establishment of the university was not without its challenges. There were moments of uncertainty and financial difficulties that threatened to delay or even halt the progress of the project. However, the determination and resilience of all those involved were crucial in overcoming these obstacles. They continued to work together, seeking creative solutions and alternatives to ensure that the vision of a Thomistic university in Mozambique becomes a reality.
Although it is not possible to name all the individuals who played a crucial role in its founding due to the large number of people involved in this process, we can recall some significant figures who made their mark in this history. Among the founders, we find people who dedicated themselves tirelessly to building this institution. These individuals not only dreamed of a university but also worked hard to turn that dream into reality.
One of these figures was Cardinal Alexandre José Maria dos Santos, OFM, former Emeritus Archbishop of Maputo, in memory. He contributed to the progress of the Mozambican people by valuing the individual in their entirety. Developing human potential in all its dimensions was the central focus of his life. As a pastor, he witnessed situations that reinforced his conviction that Mozambique's path to true freedom and independence was not yet complete. The country needed to prioritize the advancement of education and training, which involved increasing both the number of educated people and the number of higher education institutions. The establishment of the University of St. Thomas of Mozambique represented the realization of this ideal.
Another important founder was Mr. Gerardo Rocha Vera, whose passion for expanding educational opportunities transcended borders. He believed that by expanding access to higher education, the country could better equip its citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to address their problems. Rocha’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of education fueled his determination to advocate for changes in the education sector, inspiring others to join him in the mission of creating a better future for Mozambique. His visits in 1980 and 2000 convinced Cardinal of the urgency of establishing the University of St. Thomas in the country. The Cardinal, impressed by Rocha’s vision, agreed to embrace the initiative, paving the way for a new educational institution that benefits many people in Mozambique.
Among the 7,131 graduates of University of St. Thomas of Mozambique to date, 5,348 are female, representing 75%, highlighting the institution's commitment to gender equity and inclusion. Educating a man is fundamental, as he represents the unity and foundation of the family. However, educating a woman is even more significant, as she is responsible for influencing and shaping the entire family. Educating a woman means educating not just an individual, but an entire family, and consequently, society as a whole. For this reason, the University of St. Thomas of Mozambique takes pride in this unique contribution to the development of an educated Mozambique.
The African proverb "it is necessary a village to raise a child" is true, as many make up that village. Through their ideas, efforts, dedication, and affection, the University of St. Thomas of Mozambique was born and continues to serve. Sharing the same motto of "Serve and not be served!" as its founder, the University of St. Thomas of Mozambique is called to continue and perpetuate the educational activities initiated by its founder through time and space.
The founders of the University of St. Thomas of Mozambique faced various challenges along the way. They dealt with financial, logistical, and even political obstacles, but never lost sight of the greater goal: to provide a space for learning and growth for teachers, students, administrative staff, and also for the guardians.
